A trip to the sea

There's nothing like a trip to the ocean. Chuck and I celebrated our 30th anniversary with a trip to the Outer Banks. It's true what they say, "It's good for the soul."

I joined Youtube and posted my favorite video to share. This site is great fun and easy to use. I probably wouldn't post a video, since I don't really take any. But it was good to look at the better things this popular site has to offer.

Award Winning Web 2.0

For this exercise, I looked at the award winners and joined Real Travel. I posted a blog about my last trip to visit my penpal (we've been writing since age 14) in Germany. I especially wanted to see my area of travel pin pointed on the little world map. It was a short blog and after posting I was disappointed that it did not appear on my page, but went back today and it's there afterall.
I can see this site being useful for travelling tips about hotels, restaurants and other sites. Frankly, I don't think anyone would really want to read about someone else's adventures, unless you are an avid traveller. Personally, I felt a little silly writing it out. Oh, and one tip, when signing up, you are asked if you want to state your age. I thought sure, why not and I did. But when you bring up your page, there it is in big print, right by your name. A bit jarring.

#18 Zoho

So I looked around Zoho and signed up and tried to post a few sentences to my blog. I liked the applications offered and the ease of use. Also, the variety of templates was useful and I'll remember that if I need to use any. Pretty neat that they are all free too!

#17 Sandbox Wiki

So I played with the sandbox wiki and added my favorite movie and music and tv show. It was pretty easy and I added my blog to the list as well. Don't know if I would really return to do this all, cause it's not really my idea of fun. But I liked trying something new anyway. Nothing really to add.

Wikis

I always liked looking up things on Wikipedia. I think it's a good concept. Although I did hear on NPR that some political party members were editing their competition's articles and that the editing was able to be traced to the source, thus causing embarrassment.
So, is it a useful idea? After reading the library 2.0 info, I still think so. It seems fair allowing anyone to join in to contribute to a wiki, without a lot of computer know-how. It also promotes collaborative efforts and info sharing, depending on the type of wiki. That said, with a dedicated staff, a public wiki on the library web site might be used for community events or book reviews. I thought that was interesting, as long as people are sincere. That's where the staff comes in to oversee that submissions are legitimate. Wow, this does get complicated, is checking comments for obsenities, or fluff considered censorship? I guess you can take a wiki for what it offers, keeping in mind its limitations.
